By November 30, 2022, all RMTs must complete and submit the following as part of the CMTO STRiVE continuing education requirements.
E-Learning Module introducing the new risk-based approach to assessment.
This explains the new risk-based assessment, which will be launched in March 2023 as part of STRiVE. In this process, the CMTO clearly identifies which Standards of Practice RMTs should focus on, provides an opportunity to prepare, and then offers feedback and resources to support RMTs throughout the process.
This process will be based on risk rather than random selection. This will be a new process where RMTs will complete a Practice Profile, which includes a Standards of Practice quiz. An RMT who underperforms on the Standards of Practice quiz, or has a history of risk such as a history of complaints, may be selected to complete a Practice Assessment. An RMT who is unsuccessful in the first Practice Assessment may be asked to complete a second Practice Assessment. If they are unsuccessful in the second Practice Assessment, they may be referred to the Quality Assurance committee for further review.
Some examples of RMT Risks to Competence include:
- Lack of clinical exposure and experience
- Practice features, including location and size of practice
- Previous evidence of not meeting Standards of Practice
- Previous evidence of non-compliance with STRiVE and issues with conduct
- Educational institution
There are also a variety of factors that are considered to support RMT competence. These factors include but are not limited to clinical exposure and experiences, active participation in effective continuing professional development, and active professional organization participation.
RMTs will be able to review RMT risks to competence and RMT supports to competence when completing the e-learning module.
This will help you evaluate your current performance as an RMT. RMTs will be provided several performance indicators to measure themselves against.
The Learning Plan defines the RMT’s goals for professional development.
Year 1 is focused on the development of a learning plan. This learning plan must contain a minimum of two learning goals related to one of the Career Span competencies.
Year 2 is focused on a progress report for the plan that was developed in year 1. This must include a reflection on the steps you’ve taken towards achieving the goals identified in year 1.
When you get to the next reporting cycle and establish new professional learning goals, you should reflect on the accomplishment of previous learning goals and recognize any achievements.
Experiential Learning Exercise
This is submitted annually and was designed to help RMTs develop skills in the process of reflective practice. When you engage in reflective practice you can properly analyze your professional performance with a focus on ongoing improvement and development.
The Experiential Learning Exercise focuses on ‘learning by doing’, which links to the Career-Span Competency Practice in a self-reflective manner.

The learning plan must be submitted between September and November 30.
You are required to:
- Review the Career Span Competencies and determine which relate most to your professional interests and goals. You can review the Career Span Competencies on the CMTO website.
- Develop two professional learning goals that relate to at least one Career-Span Competency.
- Identify at least two learning activities that will help you to accomplish the goals you’ve identified over the next 24 months.
- Each goal needs to include a proposed completion date.
- Ensure you have submitted your learning goals, as the Submit Learning Plan button will only appear after you have done so.
This is just an example of one professional learning goal that could be developed, as well as the Career-Span Competency it would be related to, and the learning activities that could be related to the goal. Your goal should be based on your self-assessment, and you could determine whichever learning activities make the most sense to your goals.

My goal is to communicate with clients more effectively by using a communication course to assist me.

1. Communications course at community college including participating in online discussions

Detailed Guide to Completing the Progress Report
If you are in year 2 of the STRiVE learning cycle, you will be required to complete a progress report on the Learning Plan that was developed in year 1.

The progress report must be submitted between September and November 30.
The information you entered for your Learning Plan will be displayed as a reminder, but you can click the arrow next to it to hide this information if you’d like.
You will be asked to list the steps you’ve taken to progress towards your learning goal over the past 12 months. There may have been circumstances that have arisen over the past 12 months that make the original learning goal or the original proposed learning activities no longer feasible. You will be given the opportunity to explain why this is the case.
You will also be asked to update each learning activity for each goal with any progress over the past 12 months. You will have the option to upload supporting documentation (e.g. completion certificate or receipt), as well as attach a completion date to the activity.
In using the example above in the Learning Plan, it may be that something came up in your practice that you felt was more urgent than improving your patient communication, so you might indicate that this is why your original goal of improving your patient communication is no longer feasible.
If the goal remains feasible, you can list steps you’ve taken towards that goal, such as taking a community college course about patient communication. You can update the learning activity that stated you will be taking a course with the fact that you completed the course, the date the course was completed, any supporting documents, and what you gained from the course.
If there are learning activities you did not complete, e.g. if you did not yet have time to review the course materials from your patient communication course, you can indicate that you did not have the chance to complete this learning activity and that you have a plan to complete it next year.
Choosing Your Learning Activities
Learning activities do not need to be approved by the CMTO or any other organization. RMTs are responsible for selecting learning activities that meet their professional development goals. Your professional learning activities do not need to be formal courses (whether in person or virtual) but they can be. They can also be reading research journals, books or relevant magazines, among other sources, or watching relevant videos or presentations online. These are just some examples of possible learning activities.
You can choose whatever learning activities you feel will best help you achieve your learning goals and meet your professional development needs. Similarly, your learning goals need to be related to a career span competency and fulfil what you assess to be your professional development needs. You need to be able to connect your learning activities to your learning goals, and you need to be able to connect your learning goals to your self-assessment and to the Career-Span competencies.
Provide Your Feedback on STRiVE
One of the parts of STRiVE is to make each RMT the best they can be (the other is to ensure compliance with the Standards of Practice and regulations). The CMTO is conducting a review of the “be the best you can be” part of the STRiVE program. RMTs are encouraged to submit their feedback and a program evaluation survey will be made available after submitting the 2022 requirements.
